Citizens of countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland are considered third-country nationals and generally require authorization to stay in Hungary for more than 90 days.
While citizens of certain visa-exempt countries may enter Hungary without a visa for short stays of up to 90 days, students planning to undertake full-time studies must obtain a D-type study visa and a residence permit for studies before arrival.
Applications must be submitted at the Hungarian Embassy or Consulate in the applicant’s country of citizenship or legal residence. Required documents typically include a valid passport, completed application form, passport photo, university admission letter, proof of accommodation, proof of sufficient financial resources, tuition payment confirmation (or scholarship proof), travel insurance, and payment of the visa fee.
After arriving in Hungary, students must complete the residence permit process and register their accommodation through the Enter Hungary platform. Once approved, the residence permit card is issued and serves as official proof of legal stay during their studies.
